Type: ODE Model Lesson Plans
Description: Students will give persuasive presentations based on the questions theyhave researched. They will learn appropriate delivery techniques for effectivepersuasive presentations. (Note: This lesson should be taught,after students have completed taking notes but before they plan their presentations.)

  Communications: Oral and Visual
 Benchmark: C.  Vary language choice and use effective presentation techniques, including voice modulation and enunciation.
 Indicator: 6.  Adjust volume, phrasing, enunciation, voice modulation and inflection to stress important ideas and impact audience response.
Indicator: 7.  Vary language choices as appropriate to the context of the speech.
Benchmark: F.  Give presentations using a variety of delivery methods, visual materials and technology.
Indicator: 10.  Deliver persuasive presentations that:
establish a clear position;
include relevant evidence to support position and to address counter-arguments; and
consistently use common organizational structures as appropriate (e.g., cause-effect, compare-contrast).

 demonstrate an understanding of the topic and present events or ideas in a logical sequence;
 support the controlling idea or thesis with well-chosen and relevant facts, details, examples, quotations, statistics, stories and anecdotes include an effective introduction and conclusion and use a consistent organizational structure (e.g., cause-effect, compare-contrast, problem-solution);
use appropriate visual materials (e.g., diagrams, charts, illustrations) and available technology; and draw from multiple sources and identify sources used. 

red book Finding Resources: Organizing and Taking Notes — Grade Sevenblue book
Grade: Grade 7 
Type: ODE Model Lesson Plans
Description: Students will learn how to find resources and take notes by participating in group work before they begin working individually on their own research questions. Students will then identify appropriate resources and gather relevant information for their investigations. They also will practice summarizing and paraphrasing information from the sources and begin to take notes on note cards. Students will spend some time creating a cluster to develop subtopics for their research so they can organize their information more effectively.

  Indicator: 4.  Select an appropriate structure for organizing information in a systematic way (e.g., notes, outlines, charts, tables and graphic organizers).

  Benchmark  F.  Determine the extent to which a summary accurately reflects the main idea, critical details and underlying meaning of original text.

Description: Students will review how to determine the meaning of unknown words by using the context.

  Benchmark: A.  Use context clues and text structures to determine the meaning of new vocabulary.
  Indicator: 1.  Define the meaning of unknown words through context clues and the author's use of comparison, contrast, definition, restatement and example.

Grade: Grade 7 
Type: ODE Model Lesson Plans
Description: Students will summarize a paragraph of a nonfiction article with one sentence. After reading the next paragraph and summarizing it, they will combinethe summaries to cover the first two paragraphs. They continue reading oneparagraph at a time, summarizing it and writing a summary of everythingread to that point. At the end, they will have a summary of a nonfictionarticle.

Reading Process: Concepts of Print, Comprehension Strategies and Self-Monitoring Strategies
  Benchmark: B.  Apply effective reading comprehension strategies, including summarizing and making predictions, and comparisons using information in text, between text and across subject areas.
  Indicator: 4.  Summarize the information in texts, using key ideas, supporting details and referencing gaps or contradictions.

Type: ODE Model Lesson Plans
Description: Students will create a list of potential research questions that stem from their reading of science fiction. These student-generated questions will be posted in the classroom, and as the reading progresses, additional questions may be added. When it is time to begin the research process, students may select a research question from this class list.

Description: Students will learn to determine the validity of different resources. Some areas to consider will be publication date, coverage, language, point of view and primary versus secondary sources.

Description: Students will display an understanding of the three principle parts of verbs and their six tenses and will use the correct verb tense in their own writing to communicate effectively.

 Indicator: 9.  Use precise language, action verbs, sensory details, colorful modifiers and style as appropriate to audience and purpose.
