Grade: Grade 8 Type: ODE Model Lesson Plans Description: Students will create narrative paragraphs in response to a prompt. They will use the senses of smell, taste, touch, sight and hearing to completely respond to the prompt. Students' responses should show a personal style and a clear audience. Ohio Standards Connection: Primary Standards, Benchmarks, and Indicators: Standard: Writing Process Benchmark: C. Use revision strategies to improve the style, variety of sentence structure, clarity of the controlling idea, logic, effectiveness of word choice and transitions between paragraphs, passages or ideas. Indicator: 9. Use precise language, action verbs, sensory details, colorful modifiers and style as appropriate to audience and purpose. Standard: Writing Applications Benchmark: A. Compose narratives that establish a specific setting, plot and a consistent point of view, and develop characters by using sensory details and concrete language. Indicator: 1. Write narratives that: sustain reader interest by pacing action and developing an engaging plot (e.g., tension and suspense); use literary devices to enhance style and tone; and create complex characters in a definite, believable setting. |
Grade: Grade 8 Type: ODE Model Lesson Plans Description: Students will increase their vocabulary by examining, discussing and analyzing the ways that cultural, political, social, technological and scientific events impact and change the English language. Ohio Standards Connection: Primary Standards, Benchmarks, and Indicators: Standard: Acquisition of Vocabulary Benchmark: D. Explain how different events have influenced and changed the English language. Indicator: 5. Examine and discuss the ways that different events (e.g., cultural, political, social, technological, and scientific events) impact and change the English language. |
Grade: Grade 8 Type: ODE Model Lesson Plans Description: Students will learn the SQ3R reading method. As students gain familiarity and skill with the method, they will apply it to an assigned common reading assignment of a literary text. Ohio Standards Connection: Primary Standards, Benchmarks, and Indicators: Standard: Reading Process: Concepts of Print, Comprehension Strategies and Self-Monitoring Strategies Benchmark: A. Apply reading comprehension strategies to understand grade-appropriate texts. Indicator: 1. Apply reading comprehension strategies, including making predictions, comparing and contrasting, recalling and summarizing and making inferences and drawing conclusions. |
Grade: Grade 9 Type: ODE Model Lesson Plans Description: Students will correctly use quotation marks, colons and semicolons in a variety of writing situations; they also will identify and use parallel structure correctly. Ohio Standards Connection: Primary Standards, Benchmarks, and Indicators: Standard: Writing Conventions Benchmark: B. Use correct punctuation and capitalization. Indicator: 2. Use correct punctuation and capitalization. Benchmark: C. Demonstrate understanding of the grammatical conventions of the English language. Indicator: 3. Use clauses (e.g., main, subordinate) and phrases (e.g., gerund, infinitive, participial). Indicator: 4. Use parallel structure to present items in a series and items juxtaposed for emphasis. |
