red book Classifying Functions — Grade Eleven blue book
Grade: Grade 11
Type: ODE Model Lesson Plans
Description: Students will sort different types of functions including rational, periodic, exponential, polynominal, quadratic, logarithmic and linear using "function cards." The functions are displayed in multiple representations including graphical, symbolic, words and tables.  Students will sort the functions based upon characteristics of the functions or the representation.  Sometimes the criteria will be given and other times the students will provide the criteria.
Ohio Standards Connection:
Primary Standards, Benchmarks, and Indicators:

Standard: Patterns, Functions and Algebra
Benchmark: A. Analyze functions by investigating rates of change, intercepts, zeros, asymptoes, and local and global behavior.
Inidcator: 3. Describe and compare the characteristics of the folowing families of functions:
quadratics with complex roots, polynomials of any degree, logarithms, and rational fucntions; e.g., general shape, number of roots, domain and range, asymptotic behavior.
Standard:
Mathematical Processes Standard
Benchmark 1: Communicate mathematical ideas orally andin writing with a clear purpose and appropriate for a specific audience.
Standard: Patterns, Functions and Algebra
Benchmark A. Analyze functions by investigating rates of change, intercepts, zeros, asymptoes, and local and global behavior.
Indicator 4. Identify the maximum and minimum points of polynomial, rational and trigonometric functions graphically and with technology.
