red book Are You Absolutely Sure of the Value? — Grade Seven blue book
Grade: Grade 7
Type: ODE Model Lesson Plans
Description: Students will develop an understanding of absolute value through real world situations. Students will develop an understanding of when absolute value can be used in a given situation. Students will relate the need for absolute value to the task used within the lesson and write the symbolic notation to represent the task.
Ohio Standards Connection:
Primary Standards, Benchmarks, and Indicators:
Standard:
Number, Number Sense and Operations
Benchmark: I.  Use a variety of strategies, including proportional reasoning, to estimate, compute, solve and explain solutions to problems involving integers, fractions, decimals and percents.
Indicator: 6.  Simplify numerical expressions involving integers and use integers to solve real-life problems.
Standard:  Mathematical Processes Standard
Benchmark: F.  Use inductive thinking to generalize a pattern of observations for particular cases, make conjectures, and provide supporting arguments for conjectures.
Benchmark: H.  Use representations to organize and communicate mathematical thinking and problem solutions.
Benchmark: J.  Communicate mathematical thinking to others and analyze the mathematical thinking and strategies of others.
Benchmark: K.  Recognize and use mathematical language and symbols when reading, writing and conversing with others.
Secondary Standards, Benchmarks and Indicators:
Standard:
  Patterns, Functions and Algebra
Benchmark  D.  Use symbolic algebra to represent and explain mathematical relationships.
Indicator: 9.  Recognize a variety of uses for variables; e.g., placeholder for an unknown quantity in an equation, generalization for a pattern, formula.
Benchmark  G.  Write, simplify and evaluate algebraic expressions.
Indicator: 1.  Represent and analyze patterns, rules and functions with words, tables, graphs and simple variable expressions.
red book Box-and-Whisker-- Grade Sevenblue book
Grade: Grade 7
Type: ODE Model Lesson Plans
Description: Students will be introduced to the concept of box-and-whisker plots. A step-by-step process for creating a box-and-whisker plot will be provided for the student. The goal of the lesson is that students understand the components of a box-and-whisker plot and be able to analyze or compare sets of data using box-and-whisker plots.
Ohio Standards Connection:
Primary Standards, Benchmarks, and Indicators:
Standard:
Data Analysis and Probability
Benchmark: A.  Read, create and use line graphs, histograms, circle graphs, box-and-whisker plots, stem-and-leaf plots, and other representations when appropriate.
Indicator: 1.  Read, create and interpret box-and-whisker plots, stem-and-leaf plots, and other types of graphs, when appropriate.
Standard:  Mathematical Processes Standard
Benchmark: H.  Use representations to organize and communicate mathematical thinking and problem solutions.
Benchmark: J.  Communicate mathematical thinking to others and analyze the mathematical thinking and strategies of others.
Secondary Standards, Benchmarks and Indicators:
Standard:
Data Analysis and Probability
Benchmark  C.  Evaluate interpretations and conclusions as additional data are collected, modify conclusions and predictions, and justify new findings.
 Benchmark
  E.  Collect, organize, display and interpret data for a specific purpose or need.
Indicator: 2.  Analyze how decisions about graphing affect the graphical representation; e.g., scale, size of classes in a histogram, number of categories in a circle graph.
Benchmark  F.  Determine and use the range, mean, median and mode to analyze and compare data, and explain what each indicates about the data.
Indicator: 3.  Analyze a set of data by using and comparing combinations of measures of center (mean, mode, median) and measures of spread (range, quartile, interquartile range), and describe how the inclusion or exclusion of outliers affects those measures.
