Choice Time
Block Area- Train Tracks
To help our students feel welcomed back we will be adding some new toys to the classroom. Today we will be adding train tracks and trains to the block area. The students will have the opportunity to explore these items during free play and small group times.

Question of the Day
How did you spend your break?
Today we will discuss the different ways we
spent the break away from school. Each student will be given a chance to share how they celebrated the break. We will then compile a list of the different responses and discuss how everyone celebrates differently.

Large Group
Arrival Routine
Upon entering the classroom each student will go to the restroom to wash their hands before breakfast. After washing their hands the students will set up their tables for breakfast by setting out the proper tableware and utensils for that specific meal. We will then sit together and serve breakfast family style with the students. Once finished eating the students will sit on the carpet with a book while waiting for everyone to be complete. After all of the students have finished eating they will put their books away and sit on the edge of the carpet for circle time.

Today we will review the class rules and count our friends in both English and Spanish. We will then  sing the days of the week song while updating the calendar. After calendar the class will use the song charts to sing some of our favorite circle time songs. We will then go over our question of the day while introducing new
vocabulary words and tapping into our higher order thinking skills. The letter of the week is Ww, the number is 3, the shape is heart, and the color is purple.Today's question is "How did you spend the break?"

Read-Aloud
Whoever You Are- Mem Fox
Purpose for Reading: To help students get back into the rhythm of the school day and expressing emotions.
Vocabulary: Diversity, Equal, Love
Before Reading: We will discuss the various print concepts including directionality,
author/illustrator, and the parts of a book. Ask the children: "How do you describe yourself?"
During Reading: Actively comment and take the time to discuss vocabulary words and the main characters thoughts and actions. "Why is it important to accept everyone? "How are people different?" "How are you similar to the children in our story?"
After Reading: Review vocabulary words with students while writing them on the "word" portion of our class focus board. Ask the students "How can we compare and contrast each other?"

Small Group
Hands Free Painting
The students will be painting using a paintbrush taped to a hat on their head. Students will sit in front of an easel an paint using only their heads.
After the students have created their art we will discuss how it felt to paint without our hands.

Mighty Minutes #94- Old MacDonald
Sing Old MacDonald with the children. Have children name an animal and the sound it makes to use in the song. "Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O. And on that farm he had a [pig], E-I-E-I-O. With an [oink, oink] here and an [oink, oink] there. Here an [oink], there an [oink], everywhere an [oink, oink] Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O.

This week parents will be given an individualized in-kind homework assignment to work on with their children. Parents will also be encouraged to consider volunteering in our classroom at their convenience.

Wow! Experiences
Shubert's New Friend
Today the children will hear the story, "Shubert's New Friend". We will read the story aloud while questioning and explaining the characters' behaviors/choices. After the story we will discuss the importance of our Shubert story.

Question of the Day
Are you excited to be back at school?
To go along with our welcome back study the students will be asked if they are excited to be back in school. We will create a Yes and No chart to display the data we gather. We will then analyze the data by comparing the results.

How Do Dinosaurs Say I'm Mad?- Jane Yolen
Purpose for Reading: To help students get back into the rhythm of the school day and expressing emotions.
Vocabulary: Emotions, Boast, Pout, Anger
Before Reading: We will discuss the various print concepts including directionality,
author/illustrator, and the parts of a book. Ask the children: "How do you think dinosaurs say I'm mad?"
During Reading: Actively comment and take the time to discuss vocabulary words and the main characters thoughts and actions. "Why is it important to control our emotions? "How can we deal with anger?" "Do you think this is how dinosaurs really act when they are angry?"
After Reading: Review vocabulary words with students while writing them on the "word" portion of our class focus board. Ask the students "How do you act when you are mad?"

Self-Portraits
Using Intentional card M02 the students will be comparing themselves in order to create
self-portraits. Each student will be able to look in a mirror while they draw a picture of themselves. We will discuss the physical features of the human body including arms, legs, head, body, face, etc.

Mighty Minutes
Mighty Minutes #32- Walk the Line
Using masking tape or yarn, create a very long line on the floor with sections that are straight, curved, and diagonal. Hold up cards with letters representing curved lines (B), straight lines (L), and diagonal lines (A). Call attention to how the lines form each letter. Have the children walk on the line. Invite them to make their bodies straight
when they get to a straight line, curved at the
curved line, and leaning when they get to a
diagonal part of the line.

My Friend the Dentist
Today we will talk about the importance of going to the dentist to keep our teeth healthy and clean. We will discuss how the dentist helps us and why it is important to listen to what our dentists say. We will conclude this discussion with the Choosy song, My Friend the Dentist.

Sing to the tune of Row, Row, Row your boat. Use the children's ideas for movements and incorporate them into the song, "Bounce, bounce, bounce around bounce around the floor. Bouncing, bouncing, bouncing, bouncing, more and more and more. Fly, fly, fly around fly around
the floor. Flying, flying, flying, flying, more and more and more."

I'm the Boss
Today we will discuss how we are the boss of bodies and how the choices we make affect our entire bodies. We will conclude our discussion with the Choosy song, I'm the Boss. The song explains how we control our bodies, while allowing the children to get up and move.
