Pet Study

Choice Time
Dramatic Play- Vet's Office
To go along with our pet study we will be turning the kitchen and dramatic play area into a Vet's Office. The students will have the opportunity to explore these areas during free play and small group times.

Question of the Day
How can we compare pet food to the food we eat?
The class will discuss what pets eat and how we can compare those foods to what we eat.

Large Group
Arrival Routine
Upon entering the classroom each student will go to the restroom to wash their hands before breakfast. After washing their hands the students will set up their tables for breakfast by setting out the proper tableware and utensils for that specific meal. We will then sit together and serve breakfast family style with the students. Once finished eating the students will sit on the carpet with a book while waiting for everyone to be
complete. After all of the students have finished eating they will put their books away and sit on the edge of the carpet for circle time.

Today we will review the class rules and play doggy doggy where's your bone using name bones. We will then sing the days of the week song while updating the calendar. After calendar the class will use the song charts to sing some of our favorite circle time songs. We will then go over our question of the day while introducing
new vocabulary words and tapping into our
higher order thinking skills. Today's question is "How can we compare pet food to the food we eat?"

Spookley
Purpose for Reading: To introduce Spookley
to go along with out cardboard challenge project.
Vocabulary: Pumpkin Patch, Round, Square, Vine, Rectangle, Triangle
Before Reading: We will discuss the various print concepts including directionality,
author/illustrator, and the parts of a book. Ask the children: "Would you want a square
pumpkin?"
During Reading: Actively comment and take the time to discuss vocabulary words and the main characters thoughts and actions. "Why do you think the other pumpkins picked on Spookley?" "How do you think the other pumpkins treated Spookley after the storm?" "Why do you think the farmer decided to plant only Spookley seeds the following year?"
After Reading: Review vocabulary words with students while writing them on the "word" portion of our class focus board. Ask the students "Do you think a pumpkin could really grow into a square like Spookley?"

Small Group
Bird Feeders
The children will be using bird seed, corn syrup, and cookie cutters to create bird feeders. The students will be mixing the corn syrup and bird food to then pour into the cookie cutter. After the feeders have dried we will remove the cookie cutters and hang the feeders outside for the birds. During the project we will discuss the differences between pet food and the food we eat.

Washing our Hands
Today we will review the proper way to wash our hands and the importance of good hygiene. We will also review the hand washing poster by the sinks. We will conclude our discussion with the Choosy song, "My Hands Need Washed".

Question of the Day
How can we help pets who are hurt or sick?
The class will discuss how pets need to see a
doctor just like us when hurt or sick. We will also discuss other ways we can help our pets feel better.

Before Reading: We will discuss the various print concepts including directionality,
author/illustrator, and the parts of a book. Ask the children: "How would you describe Swimmy's habitat?"
During Reading: Actively comment and take the time to discuss vocabulary words and the main characters thoughts and actions. "Why do you think  Swimmy is the only black fish?" "What were some of the things Swimmy saw on his travels?" "Why do you think Swimmy's idea worked?"
After Reading: Review vocabulary words with students while writing them on the "word" portion of our class focus board. Ask the students "Do you think you could live in the sea like Swimmy?"

Shape Pet Collage
The children be using the shapes they previously cut out to create a pet collage. During the project we will discuss the shapes and their characteristics. Once the students have completed the collages they will describe the pet they have created.

Today the students will playing a letter sound game where they will identify the letter and the sound that it corresponds with.

Choosy Dancing
Today we will interact and get our bodies moving by dancing to a few of our Choosy songs. The students will be able to help choose which songs we listen and dance to. This activity will help the students get their bodies moving and serve as a brain break for our learners.

Choice Time
Sensory Table- Pet Wash
We will be adding plastic animal figures into the sensory table for the students to put through a pet wash. We will discuss how to properly care for our pets and the importance of keeping them clean.

Question of the Day
How are pets different? Are all animals pets?
The students will compare and contrast different types of pets. We will also discuss if all animals are pets and what makes an animal not a pet?

Using blocks the students will measure various animal figures. We will then compare the different heights of animals and decide which is the tallest and which is the shortest.

Today the students will review the importance of keeping our classroom clean as to avoid germs and disease. Throughout our discussion we will discuss different ways we can all work together to keep our classroom safe and clean.

Where can pets live?
The students will discuss different types of
homes for pets and compare those homes to the habitats of wild animals.

Bird Nests
Today we will be using paper mache and bowls to create bird nests. The students will dip pieces of newspaper into the glue and water mixture and then use them to line the inside of the bowl. After the paper mache has dried we will remove the nests from the bowls.
