FALL/HALLOWEEN

Large Group
Arrival Routine
Upon entering the classroom each student will go to the restroom to wash their hands before breakfast. After washing their hands the students will set up their tables for breakfast by setting out the proper tableware and utensils for that specific meal. We will then sit together and serve breakfast family style with the students. Once finished eating the students will sit on the carpet with a book while waiting for everyone to be
complete. After all of the students have finished eating they will put their books away and sit on the edge of the carpet for circle time.

Question of the Day
Do you like Fall?
To introduce the topic of Fall we will begin this week with a simple yes or no question of the day. After each child has given their answer we will compare the results and discuss more than/less than.

Large Group
Circle Time
Today we will review the class rules and go on a nature walk to collect Fall items. We will then sing the days of the week song while updating the calendar. After calendar the class will use the song charts to sing some of our favorite circle time songs. We will then go over our question of the day while introducing new vocabulary words
and tapping into our higher order thinking skills.
Today's question is "Do you like Fall?"

The Big Pumpkin
Purpose for Reading: To introduce the concept of Halloween and symbols associated with the holiday.
Vocabulary: Witch, Halloween, Ghost, Vampire, Mummy, Bat
Before Reading: We will discuss the various print concepts including directionality,
author/illustrator, and the parts of a book. Ask the children: "What do you think they are going to do with that big pumpkin?"
During Reading: Actively comment and take the time to discuss vocabulary words and the main characters thoughts and actions. "Why do you think the witch couldn't get the pumpkin off the vine? "How were the characters in this story alike/different?" "Why was the bat able to get the pumpkin off the vine?"
After Reading: Review vocabulary words with students while writing them on the "word" portion of our class focus board. Ask the students "How would you use that big pumpkin?"

Small Group
Leaf Collages
The children be using different types and colors of leaves such as inspiration to create leaf collages. For this project the students will have access to tissue paper, construction paper, paper plates, glue, scissors, any supplies they feel are needed to create a leaf collage. Once the students have completed their collages they will describe what they have created.

Spreading Germs
With the weather changing people are more
prone to getting sick so today we will discuss ways we can prevent spreading germs and staying healthy. We will cover topics such as dressing appropriately while outside, washing our hands, covering our mouths when we cough/sneeze, eating healthy, and more.

Choice Time
Dramatic Play-Haunted House
To go along with our Fall/Halloween study we will be turning the kitchen and dramatic play area into a Haunted House.This area will include costumes, Plastic pumpkin, and other Halloween decorations. The students will have the opportunity to explore these areas during free play and small group times.

This week parents will be given a Fall theme
related in-kind homework assignment. Parents will also be encouraged to consider volunteering in our classroom at their convenience.

Today we will list characteristics of the Fall
season. We will discuss fall symbols, holidays, foods, clothes, activities and so on.

certain Fall related object based on the Spyer's clues.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Purpose for Reading: To discuss how creatures change over time.
Vocabulary: Egg, Caterpillar, Cocoon, Change
Before Reading: We will discuss the various print concepts including directionality,
author/illustrator, and the parts of a book. Ask the children: "Why do you think the caterpillar is so hungry?"
During Reading: Actively comment and take the time to discuss vocabulary words and the main characters thoughts and actions. "Why did the caterpillar get a stomach ache?" "How did the caterpillar change throughout the story?" "Why do you think the caterpillar made a cocoon?"
After Reading: Review vocabulary words with students while writing them on the "word" portion of our class focus board. Ask the students "Do you think the caterpillar will still be very hungry now that he is a butterfly?"

Pinecone Painting
The children be exploring paint and pine cones in order to create their own pinecone paintings. For this project the students will be given paint and pinecones and will be able to explore these materials to discover different ways to paint using the pine cones as the paintbrush. Once the students have completed their paintings they will describe what they have created.

Dressing for the Weather
Today we will discuss that with a new season comes new weather. The main topic of our discussion will be how Fall means the weather is going to be cooler so we need to dress for the weather. This discussion will include types of Fall clothes and why it important for us to stay warm in the colder weather to avoid getting sick.

Why do/don't you like Fall?
To go along with our previous questions this
week we will discuss the reasons why we like do or don't like Fall. Our discussion will include the characteristics of Fall that influenced our opinions on the Seasons.

The students will take part in a guessing game activity using different Fall symbols. A mystery bag will be introduced to the students with a mystery item inside. The teacher will describe what is in the bag until it is correctly guessed. Each child will then be given a chance to place and describe an item in the mystery bag.

Pumpkin Seed Counting
The children be using pumpkin seeds to sharpen their counting abilities. The students will be presented with paper pumpkins, each labeled with a number 1-10. Using the seeds and the pumpkins, the students will place the correct amount of seeds on each pumpkin.

Brushing our Teeth
Today we will review how to take care of our teeth. We will discuss the importance of brushing daily and foods that are good and bad for our teeth. We will conclude our discussion with the Choosy song, "Brush my Smile".

We will be adding various Fall objects such as leaves, pine cones, small pumpkins, and so on to the sensory table for the students to explore. We will discuss the different parts of Fall and how they represent the season.

Seasons?
Today we will be comparing all four of the
seasons. We will first list the characteristics of each season and then compare those results to Fall. We will discuss topics such as weather, activities, holidays, clothes, and so on.

Fall Inspired Painting

The children be using symbols of Fall such as pine cones, pumpkins, and leaves as inspiration for their own unique paintings. During the project we will discuss and compare the different Fall materials. Once the students have completed their paintings they will describe what they have created.

Fall Foods
Now that autumn is here we will discuss the
types of fruits of vegetables we often find around this time of year. We will discuss produce such as grapes, apples, pumpkins, squash, pears, etc. We will also talk about where we can find these autumn fruits and vegetables in our community.
