No School Beginning of the Year Study

Large Group
Arrival Routine
The children will sign in each morning. Sign in sheets will differentiated according to the students' level. After signing in students will move to the carpet to prepare for circle time. Students will be able to read books or build puzzles on the carpet while waiting for friends to finish signing in.

Circle Time
Today we will review the class rules and take a tour of the classroom. We will then sing the days of the week song while updating the calendar. After calendar the class will also sing our "What is the Weather" song and discuss what the weather looks like from outside the windows. We will then go over our schedule for the day pointing to each picture so that the children will know what to expect for the day. The letter of the week (Aa), shape of the week (Circle), color of the week (Red), and number of the week (5) will be introduced. Today's question is "How does school make you feel?"

Read-Aloud
Clifford's First School Day
Purpose for Reading: To introduce the concept of the first day of school and the feelings associated with it.
Vocabulary: School, Playground, Classroom
Before Reading: We will discuss the various print concepts including directionality, author/illustrator, and the parts of a book. Ask the children: "What do you think Clifford will do on his first day of school?"
During Reading: Actively comment and take the time to discuss vocabulary words and the main characters thoughts and actions. "Why do you think Emily Elizabeth brought Clifford in for show and tell?" "What would you do on your first day of school if you were Clifford?" "Do you think Clifford should have been at school? Why/Why Not."

A new morning song to the tune of BINGO. "To all of my friends at our preschool, Hello I say to you, H-E-L-L-O, H-E-L-L-O, H-E-L-L-O, hello to all of you!" Ms. Jessica will sing the song first and then have the students join in.

Self-Portrait
Using Intentional card M02 the students will be comparing themselves in order to create self-portraits. Each student will be able to look in a mirror while they draw a picture of themselves. We will discuss the physical features of the human body including arms, legs, head, body, face, etc.
 
Outdoor Experiences
Playground Safety
Before the students play on the playground we will discuss rules to keep everyone safe. After we have reviewed how to stay safe on the playground the students will be able to explore the slides, monkey bars, and other equipment. If the weather does not cooperate we will play with the beanbags in our classroom.

Wow! Experiences
Washing our Hands
Today we will review the proper way to wash our hands and the importance of good hygiene. We will also review the hand washing poster by the sinks. We will conclude our discussion with the Choosy song, "My Hands Need Washed."
 
Choice Time
Library Area
To go along with our beginning of the year study we will be adding school and emotion related literature to the library area. The students will have the opportunity to explore/interact with these books throughout the day.

Family Partnerships
Parents will be given a class newsletter and calendar. We will also be sending home bus information this week. Parents will be encouraged to consider volunteering in our classroom at their convenience.

Before Reading: We will discuss the various print concepts including directionality, author/illustrator, and the parts of a book. Ask the children: "How do you think Pete feels about his first day of school?"
During Reading: Actively comment and take the time to discuss vocabulary words and the main characters thoughts and actions. "Why do you think Pete doesn't worry at school?" "How do you make yourself feel better when you're worried?" "Do you think Pete had a good first day of school? Why/Why Not?"
After Reading: Review vocabulary words with students while writing them on the "word" portion of our class focus board. Ask the students "What do you think will happen on Pete's second day of school?"

The students will take part in a shape hunt. Each student will be asked to find a certain shape somewhere in the classroom.

Brushing our Teeth
Today we will review how to take care of our teeth. We will discuss the importance of brushing daily and foods that are good and bad for our teeth. We will conclude our discussion with the Choosy song, "Brush My Smile."

Safe Place
To go along with out beginning of the year study we will be adding a few feeling buddies to the safe place. The students will be able to use these buddies to help express their emotions during the transition.

We will be playing Simon says so the students will try to do every movement Simon says however, if Tiger says to do something they are "out". Students will be given the opportunity to quietly roar like a tiger to get back in the game.

Name Writing
Using intentional teaching card LL29 the students will be writing their names. We will first sing the name song which can be altered to fit each child's name: T for Taylor, T for Taylor, T-A-Y-L-O-R, T for Taylor, T for Taylor, T-A-Y-L-O-R. Then each child will attempt to write his/her name. 

Outdoor Experiences
Playground Exploration
Before the students play on the playground we will discuss rules to keep everyone safe. After we have reviewed how to stay safe on the playground the students will be able to explore the slides, monkey bars, and other equipment. Trying New Foods
Today the children will discuss the importance of trying new foods. We will discuss our class menu to find foods that may be new to some of our friends. We will talk about how it is important to eat all kinds of different foods(fruits, vegetables, grains, etc.) and how you don't know if you like something until you try it.

We will be adding traceable number cards to the writing area. These cards will allow students to begin learning the movements required to write numbers 1-10.

The students will be playing a dancing game. To play the game we will turn on and periodically turn off some music instructing the students to freeze when the music turns off. Throughout the game the students will be encouraged to get creative with their dancing and freezing positions.

Cutting Lines
Using the intentional teaching card P08 the students will be practicing their cutting skills. We will discuss and model the proper way to hold, open, and shut scissors. Each student will be using a pair of scissors in order to cut a straight, curvy, and zigzag line.
 
Outdoor Experiences

The children will explore the playground this week. Students will be encouraged to play cooperatively with their friends while on the playground and on the equipment. We will be discussing playground safety throughout this time. If the weather does not cooperate we will play duck, duck, goose in the classroom.

Wow! Experiences
Keeping our Classroom Clean
Today the students will review the importance of keeping our classroom clean as to avoid germs and disease. Throughout our discussion we will discuss different ways we can all work together to keep our classroom safe and clean.

Choice Time
Science Area
We will be adding various sensory bottles to the science areas. These bottles can be used for exploration or as a calming technique for students struggling during the transition to school.
