EARTH DAY HISTORY
EARTH DAY HISTORY
In 1963 Senator Gaylord Nelson became concerned over the condition of our planet.  He knew that our world was becoming polluted and that many plants and animals were dying.  He did not understand why people were not trying to correct the problem.  He spoke to many lawmakers and the President about the problem.  The President began to make speeches about the problems our planet had because of pollution.  There was still not enough people working on the problems to solve them.
In 1969 Senator Nelson decided to have a special day that would educate people about the things that needed to be changed to save our planet.  He wrote letters to all of the colleges and put a special article in Scholastic Magazine for children.
On April 22, 1970 the first Earth Day was held.  People from all over our country promised to help solve the problems and help save our planet.  Since then Earth Day has become a world-wide event.  People from all over the world work together to solve the environmental problems facing our world.
