Question of the Day
Do you know what Earth Day is?
Today the students will discuss what they think Earth Day is and why we celebrate it. We will create a list of the answers the
students come up with and talk about why
we celebrate our planet every year.

Large Group
Arrival Routine
Upon entering the classroom each student will go to the restroom to wash their hands before breakfast. After washing their hands the students will set up their tables for
breakfast by setting out the proper tableware and utensils for that specific meal. We will then sit together and serve breakfast family style with the students. Once finished eating the students will sit on the carpet with a book while waiting for everyone to be complete. After all of the students have finished eating they will put their books away and sit on the edge of the carpet for circle time.

Today we will review the class rules and count our friends in both English and Spanish. We will then  sing the days of the week song while updating the calendar. After calendar the class will use the song charts to sing some of our favorite circle time songs. We will then go over our question of the day while introducing new vocabulary words and tapping into our higher order thinking skills. The  letter of the week is Vv, the number is 20, the shape is square, and the color is green. Today's question is "Do you know what Earth Day is?"

Purpose for Reading: To introduce the concept of Earth day and caring for our planet
Vocabulary: Conserve, Recycle, Compost
Before Reading: We will discuss the various print concepts including directionality,
author/illustrator, and the parts of a book.
Ask the children: "How can we help our
world?" During Reading: Actively comment and take the time to discuss vocabulary words and the main characters thoughts and actions. "Why is it important to conserve water?" "How can we conserve energy?" "How does recycling help our planet?"
After Reading: Review vocabulary words with students while writing them on the "word" portion of our class focus board. Ask the students "How else can we help our world?"

Paper Mache Earth
Today we will begin making our own version of the planet Earth using paper mache. The students will be mixing together water and glue for the project. We will inflate a large balloon that the students will cover in newspaper strips that have been dipped in the water/glue solution. Once the balloon is covered, leaving a small hole near the bottom of the balloon, we will allow it to
dry overnight. Once the paper mache has dried we will pop the balloon and then work together to paint our version of Earth.

Mighty Minutes #22- Hot or Cold 3-D Shapes
Show and name several three-dimensional shapes. Explain that you will be hiding one of them. Choose one child to be "the finder." Have her cover her eyes while you or the children hide one of the shapes. Have the children say, "hot!" when the finder gets closer to the object and "cold!" when she moves away from it. Have the finder name the shape and where it was hidden. Repeat
the activity with another shape.

When I Move My Parts
Today we will review the importance of exercising everyday to keep our bodies happy and healthy. We will do various exercises with the children that they can do at home and share with their families. We will conclude this lesson with the Choosy song, When I Move My Parts.

Science Area- Globe
To go along with our Earth Day study we will be adding a globe to the science area. The students will have the opportunity to explore this version of the Earth during center and small group times.

Today we are going to plant our own seeds. We will be using various types of vegetable seeds including, corn, beans, peas, pumpkin,
watermelon, and cucumber. The students will plant the seeds and then leave them in the sun to grow.

Mighty Minutes #61- Riddle, Riddle, What is That?
Choose several items related to the current study. Create a riddle to describe each item such as, "I am green and grow on trees." Begin each riddle by saying, "Riddle, riddle, what is that?" Allow the children to take turns guessing the item.

Mix It All Up
Today we will review foods that are healthy for us and how we can enjoy them. We will then dance to the song Mix It All Up. The songs gives the children directions to act as blenders and then pick different fruits in order to make a Choosy smoothie.

How can we help take care of our planet?
Today the students will discuss different ways they can help take care of the planet. We will create a list of the answers the students come up with and discuss how the different actions can positively affect our world.

Recycled Creations
Using various recyclable items the children will be making their own creations. Students will be presented with the items along with
scissors, glue, collage materials, and anything else they may need in order to
create their art. While working we will discuss how we are recycling these items
and why it's important to recycle to help keep our planet clean.

Mighty Minutes #35- My Name, Too!
Tell the children that you are going to play a
game where they must listen for words that begin with the same sound. Relate a child's name to a series of words that have the same initial sound. For example: "If your name begins like Meat, Mat, and Mitt, please stand up." Repeat the alliteration with other children's names.

Today we are going to review making healthy choices to take care of our bodies. We will talk about healthy foods and drinks. Our discussion will also include moving to keep ourselves healthy. We will conclude this lesson with the Choosy song, I'm learning to choose.

Manipulatives- Recycled Puzzles
To go along with our Earth Day study we will be adding puzzles made from recycled items to the manipulatives center. The students will have the opportunity to explore these puzzles during center and small group
times.

Why is it important to take care of our
planet?
Today we will discuss why it is important for us to take the extra step to care for our planet. We will discuss keeping our planet clean and conserving our natural resources for our futures. We will also discuss how our actions affect animals and how the health of wildlife affects us.

Using green and blue stones the students will be creating and extending AB patterns. We will also have stones available for students who want to try ABC, AAB, ABB, etc. patterns. We will discuss the rules of the patterns as the students complete them.

Today we will be talking about keeping our hearts healthy. We will discuss heart healthy foods and how exercising helps our hearts grow stronger and healthier. We will conclude this lesson with the Choosy song, My Heart Says Thanks.

What can we recycle at school or at home?
Today the students will discuss what they can recycle or reuse at home or in our classroom. We will create a list of the answers the students come up with and decide whether or not they can be recycled and describe in further detail why recycling is so important for our planet.

Earth Balloon Painting
Today the students will explore blue and green paint along with balloons in order to create Earth like art. The students will be dipping blown balloons in both green and blue paint and then stamping them onto the paper creating an Earth like image. As we are painting we will look at the globeand
discuss how the green color represents land and the blue represents water. We will discuss the ratio between land and water on Earth and why taking conserving water is so important to our planet.

Mighty Minutes #13- Simon Says
We will be playing Simon says so the students will try to do every movement Simon says however, if Tiger says to do something they are "out". Students will be given the opportunity to quietly roar like a tiger to get back in the game.
